Out of my Mind Imagine having to sit in the same spot all your life because you can’t move your arms or legs. You have to have someone help you with every simple task, even as simple as moving across the room. Some people take it for granted that they can walk around, but imagine not being able to stand. On top of all that you can’t even talk! How would you feel to have people think that you are as dumb as a rock, and not be able to explain how smart that you really are? Everyday life is like that for Melody Brooks, because of a disease she has called Cerebral Palsy. She can’t escape the thoughts inside her head. Will she ever be normal for her or will she have to spend the rest of her life trapped inside her mind? The major theme of the book …show more content…

Melody already has a lot to deal with, but now she has to deal with other “regular” people that think that she is not “regular.” What is regular anyways? In this book, I think it means the way you look in act, but not the way you think because Melody has a strong mind but is not “regular.” Some people help her in life and some cause her harm. Mrs. V is an example of someone who helps Melody. She relates to the theme, anyone can hear you, all they have to do is listen, because she believes Melody has a voice and wants to help her express it as much as possible. One example is shown on page 46, “So Mrs. V made it her new mission to give me language” (Draper). Mrs. V decides to make Melody words on her wheelchair to help her talk. She realizes that Melody is just like any other kid, maybe better, she just can’t talk, and decides to fix that problem. She is one of the few characters who doesn’t judge Melody on her physical appearance. Rose relates to the theme because she befriends Melody when no one else at school does. She is not afraid what others will think of her. Rose stood up for Melody when other kids were making fun of her, “She’s smart” (Draper 195). Rose realizes that Melody is smart and deserve to be acknowledged for that. She discovers that even though Melody may look different physically, mentally she is just like all the other kids, maybe even a little smarter. It shows that she is not think Melody is a stereotype of disabled kids, but a smart
