The author of Outcasts United, Warren St. John, gave a talk on campus discussing his novel, how he found out about the refugees in Atlanta and how his book came about. Originally the story revolving the fugees was only planned for an article on the New York Times however when he researched Clarkston he realized he had a novel on his hands. This was further proved when the mayor told him there is no problem here and to leave and Warren knew he had a great story. The author learned about the refugee’s resettlement through an acquaintance and was able to call Luma and she told him that he could visit the first game they were playing which was in the first chapter of the novel.
Conventional wisdom has it that society has been taught to be accepting and kind to the people around them, kindness can vary among social groups due to different backgrounds, ethnicity, and learned prejudices. It can be trialing for someone experiencing hyper-diversity to be affable and work towards social justice for minority groups, while doing this, they in turn, express a sense of integrity. All throughout the book Outcast United written by Warren St. John, the author writes about and capitalises a few of Bethel College values such as diversity, community, and service. Outcast United is written by Warren St. John, he was a journalist for the New York Times and has received many awards for excellence in writing. Outcast United is the story of a refugee soccer team and about a woman who is a great coach. The book focuses on the life of the refugees, and the struggle they went through to get settled in Clarkston, Georgia. It also talks about how they were forced to hold guns and fight for their village and its people. Some kids suffered some illness and psychological conditions.

Life isn’t fair for many people, and in the Novel Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck, this is evident through the characters of Crooks, Lennie, Candy, and Curley’s wife. In comparison to the other workers, these four outcasts are more closely related to each other than one may at first realize. Lennie has a lack of mental capacity, Crooks is black and has an injured back, Candy is missing a hand and is also old, and Curley’s wife is isolated by the other men due to being too flirtatious. These qualities, albeit unfortunate at best, gives these characters all one thing in common; they’re neglected and undesired by the other workers on the farm.
The most memorable and important lesson that I have learned from reading Outcasts United was the gradual, but mutual respect and commonality among a group of refugees playing soccer, whom more or less, shared very little in common when first arriving in the United States. This very common, yet profound theme of cohesion, teamwork, and overall unity of a group highlighted a key similarity between the book and my new experience at Georgia College and State University. Similar to how the newly arrived refugees in Outcasts United befriended other players of the same nationality and culture, students at Georgia College often associate and later befriend others based on a similar background whether that be through prior friendships or through

A Brave New World: Outcasts in Society Aldous Huxley’s ‘Brave New World’, Huxley creates a fictional society that resorts to exile as their main form of punishment. Because this society believes that they are better than the rest, they resort to exile to show just how “superior” they are. Exile is at its most significant point when Bernard, one of the main characters is a victim of it, this is a turning point in the story. Huxley’s portrayal of exile and the toll that it takes on victims of it, serve as a warning as to what would happen if exile did become a common punishment, and how cruel it would be to those within its grasp.
My life took an interesting turn when my mother told me I would be moving to a different country, fear took over my body because that meant I would have to start from zero. On January 1st, 2011 my mom gave me the exciting news that her fiancée, now husband, had started the process to bring her to the United States so she could become a permanent resident, live with him, form a family and start a brand new life. I remember her face blighting up to every time she spoke a word but that smile faded once she told me I could not come with at that time because of the expense of the process. I understood why she could not bring me with. We had economic and emotional issues going on.
Although I was born in Nevada, I left the states at three months old to China where my maternal grandparents lived. That was because my parents, as immigrants with a minimal educational background, were financially unstable and had to work, so they were not able to raise me. However, the summer before I turned 6 years old, my father brought me back to the U.S. to Los Angeles, California. By then, my parents were already divorced. I moved to Northern California where my aunt raised me in Cupertino for a majority of my elementary and middle school years.
“And her eyes traveled from one face to another. ‘They left all the weak ones here’” (77). This quote appears late in the novel when Slim, George, and a few others from the ranch left to go into town. This means they left the others that were considered ‘the outcasts’ behind. In Of Mice and Men, these outcasts, Candy, Crooks, Curley’s Wife, and Lennie, are discriminated for their physical capabilities, race, gender, and mental abilities.
Occasionally, my dad would sleep in a different room in the house. One day shortly after the end of my fourth grade year, when what was to be a summer to remember, my mom broke the news to me and my brother. It had ended. Mom and dad were getting divorced. I remember feeling shocked and confused.
From this day, I still remember how lonely I felt and how badly I wanted to be accepted. I dreaded to go to recess because I wasn't sure what type of crowd I would “ fit in” with. As I walked in class, I saw everyone divided into various cliques and eventually I found myself every week trying to fit in with a different one. I tried my best to act like those kids in order to fit in, I changed so many things such as my attitude, my clothing, my hairstyles and how I spoke in the span of one year. I was so desperate to feel like I was not alone and had real friends that I basically would’ve done anything for others to like me.
Well, my story started off, when I was just an unborn baby floating in the boat. A fisherman, Dictys, found my pregnant mother, off the shores of Argos. Sadly, I never got the chance to meet her, but Dictys, always said, she was a woman worth remembering. Growing up without a mother was unpleasant at times, but my adopted pops compensated and taught me his trades. Honestly, I always felt like there was more to me than a mere fisherman.
