In the outside world, living can be extremely hard and dangerous, from all the known dangers, diseases, and weathers. In the 1930s, Josh and his brother Joey, left their homes to see if they could find a better life in the outside world. Josh’s best friend Howie died in an accident which caused a large tragedy throughout the story, and gravely remembered in this book. Josh and Joey were still able to progress and find a job. Eventually they returned home to Chicago.They went through many problems on their journey, and if forced them to move on without will. This taught them to be more careful of their actions. Josh's anger didn't make him think before his actions when he yelled at his younger brother, Joey. When Josh became mad at Joey and struck him for not saving their that they had collected, Josh couldn't think before his action. In Chapter 8, Josh said, ¨I struck Joey, It was the first time that I´ve ever struck him.¨ As a result, Josh causes Joey to feel hurt, and from that Joey ran away from him. They had been separated for a long time now, and Josh missed Joey and it made him feel worried and sad. As a result from this tragedy, Josh learned to be careful of is actions the hard way. This moment was a whole problem of being uncareful and not thinking about your actions. When the fire that was caused from a tent caused the entire carnival to burn down, everyone that was there was in a moment of grief.
