In an attempt to down play his heritage to avoid racial bias, Toufic wears a Hispanic shirt to try to pass as Mexican when he goes through the security line at airports. Due to the color of his skin and Arabic descent, Toufic has a greater chance of being racially profiled by TSA agents as a terrorist. This bias takes only his outward appearance into account and ignores all of Toufic’s other attributes. The same use of clothing to profile someone is used in Monster during the trial. All of the characters that have survived this long in the post-apocalyptic United States have had either two ways of viewing outsiders; they are either welcoming with the thinking that the more knowledge and people a group has the better they will be at survival or, they see outsiders as a liability and danger to their current way of survival. The same American prejudice against outsiders is seen in The Walking Dead and in Arab in America. Despite Toufic’s American upbringing he is seen as a threat to others because of his Arabic ancestry. In The Walking Dead, Rick is helped by Glenn to escape Atlanta, and joins his community. The community that Rick joins considers any one still alive as an American that is welcome to join their community as long as they are willing to do their fair share of the work load. The meaning of American has changed with the collapse of society, the “walkers” pose a greater threat to survival than other humans as a whole.
