Overall Cultural Assessment: Implications Cultural Identity of the Individual Sam is a Filipino male and his situation would be something common within the culture. Living within the Asian culture has barriers towards seeking mental health services and causes challenges while expressing his pain within himself. One of the challenges for seeking mental health services comes from the stigma around mental health illnesses within the Asian culture and how people would look weak when seeking such services. Asian families tend to be more traditional and importance of familial orientation (Ng, 1997, p. 384). The reason that Asian do not explain their situation and feeling towards others because of the way that they will take and understand the situation. Sam understand that he would be able to explain his symptoms to others the same way that he would be able to understand the situation. Furthermore, Sam would not be able to describe his situation to friends and others much because of the way that people will view him. The Asian culture does not really emphasize the idea of expressing one’s feelings because of the way that others will view the situation and person. During the process, Sam lacked close friends and suffered from only child syndrome. One of the main supports during the stressful process was his mother who fully understand what happened. Through the family dynamics having support within the family has been a strong support in the Asian culture and for Sam, this has greatly helped him express his feelings. Currently, his friends, co-workers, and girlfriend have been a great support in providing emotional support during his life right now. These friends allow him to openly express himself in times of distress and guided him through his life so that he would give over the depression. Having friends allowed him to talk about the situation and allow him to express his stressful situation. Having his supportive social support allowed Sam to become more resilient in stressful situations and built up his trust between
