"No Gumption" is a chapter in the memoir Growing Up by Russell Baker. He writes about how he was considered to not have "gumption" by his mother and others; he preferred to read comic books and such instead of working or doing chores. He does start selling the Saturday Evening Post as a newsboy, but at the end of the chapter, his life has changed: he decides he will be a writer when he grows up. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is a 1969 autobiography about the early years of American writer and poet Maya Angelou.
In this little story Annie Dillard is trying to say work instead of being lazy basically. She said " Doing something does not require discipline; it create its own discipline- with a little help from caffeine". Dillard was basically saying you have discipline yourself. Don 't be hard on yourself while being discipline. Anne Dillard was making a great

Look at the world and think about what has changed over the past centuries and see if we can determine why it has now become what it is today. Our history has plenty of technologies and other products that have risen in the past five or six centuries, but now have changed a bit that might not be good. Almost everyone has some type of habit in their lives that they deal with and some are worst than others, but a habit can lead many down the wrong path if the habit is used extensively. The book that I read was Forces of Habit and it deals with the history of alcohol to drugs that we know of today.
In Derek Thompson’s “A World Without Work” he cites John Maynard Keynes, who once predicted technological progress would allow for a 15 hour work week, yet according to the US bureau of labor statistics, in 2015 the average full time employee was working 8.06 hours a day. This adds up to be approximately 40.3 hours per week. In order to stay competitive in the global economy, America has kept the workforce working longer hours compared to other economically competitive countries even though it has been detrimental to the workforce’s health. The most bothersome part though is that the long hours are not even necessary. France, a country with a GDP per capita of $42,200 according to the C.I.A. World Fact Book, works on average 12 hours less a
As an only child living with an elderly couple, Montgomery found companionship in her imagination, nature, books, and especially writing. When she was nine, she began writing poetry and keeping a journal. She also spent time with her Uncle John and Aunt Annie Campbell (her mother 's sister), and their family in Park Corner. There she spent many happy days, playing with her cousins and visiting her paternal grandfather, Senator Donald Montgomery, who lived close to the Campbells. She loved her Cavendish home and Silver Bush (as the Campbell farm was called) in Park Corner.
The article, Little Bowls of Colors by Ewa Hryniewicz-Yarbrough talks about mother language and effects of other languages on it. She explained that the first language which a child will learn is his or her mother language because before our birth the mother language already exists. But, it is not clear as much as families who speak in different languages since; families who speak in two different languages their children will speak their mother’s language rather than other members of family language. This essay will discuss the organization and content that include mother language and effects of new environment on expressing feeling and idea.
Ronald David Laing (1927- 1989) was a Scottish existential psychiatrist who wrote largely on the experience of psychosis. He is considered a path breaker in the field of psychology as he quite openly shunned the psychiatric orthodoxy of his times and willingly parted ways with classical psychotherapy in a bid to seek new treatments for schizophrenia based on an interest in the rights of mental patients. Since he was largely influenced by the existential outlook, he always advocated the use of a patient’s descriptions of his/her lived experience as valid rather than simply checking his/her symptoms for a particular disorder. Despite his eventual radicalism, his early life and training were pretty orthodox. He was born in Glasgow, eventually
Sam Anderson’s piece “In Defense of Distraction” was published into the New York Magazine in 2009. Anderson wanted to evoke from the readers a feeling of security that distraction can be a “trait” that does not have to be discouraged. Although many people perceive distraction as an impediment to progress and innovation, Anderson argues the contrary as he exemplifies how diversion from focus actually is a prerequisite for creativity. To demonstrate how distraction benefits growth, Anderson aims to convince his readers through his playful and sanguine, yet still an enlightening and informative tone for his reasoning behind his assertions by validating it through his word choice and scientific evidence. Distraction is a necessary “evil” for society to move forward and craft original and unique ideas for the future.

According to Keith Ablow’s “The Dangers of Cramming”, cramming can do more harm than good because of its negative effects to our mind and body. Such side effects are temporary intellectual lapses which causes a person to lose focus. However, this effect differs to everyone since each of us has different requirement for a full good night’s sleep. Ablow mentions that though students think that stimulants will help them cram, they actually don’t, it actually just “… disguise – briefly – a reduced capacity to grasp, retain, and retrieve information” (Ablow 5). Coffee causes Caffeine Intoxication Syndrome which leads one to have anxiety, panic, headaches, and insomnia.
People often put off important tasks, whether it’s something easy or challenging, until the last minute. It’s not something to be proud of, but it’s not something that one can easily overcome. As most know, procrastination, according to the online Cambridge Dictionary, is the act of delaying something that must be done, often because it is unpleasant or boring. Although many dawdle due to psychological factors, more people, especially students, now find themselves being drawn to ongoing distractions from advancing technology and easy access to social media platforms that are affecting GPAs, sleep patterns, and general health. Technology was initially developed to help individuals to be more efficient with their tasks.
My concept of procrastination was that mine wasn’t all that bad, that I didn’t procrastinate that much. So that meant in my mind that deadlines weren’t that big of a thing to worry about. I would get the work done in time for it even if the work was thrown together last minute. Time also seems to become a less intimidating thing.
