Wamn! A player just kicked the ball into the goal, Some think competitive sports are bad while others think it’s good. It’s clear that overall competitive sports is a hot topic. It’s clear that the negative overlooks the positive because of 3 main reasons concussions, injuries, and mental reasons. First off sports can cause concussions, nearly 300,000 concussions occur a year.
However, it is also important to note that a concussion can also take place outside of sports, meaning it can happen to anybody. For instance, there have been incidents where a person tripped while running, fell, and the impact of their head’s contact with the ground caused a concussion. Or, in a car accident many front-seat passengers, or even the driver, have slammed their heads against the dashboard/steering wheel, also possibly resulting in a concussion. Concussions when treated can be healed in a timely manner. Unfortunately, throughout history, there has been a tendency for people to overlook a concussion as a serious injury, therefore, making it more problematic than it already is.
When asked if high school senior Kelb y Jasmon would report a concussion to a coach or trainer, he replied, “No chance. It’s not dangerous to play with a concussion. You’ve got to sacrifice for the sake of the team. The only way I come out is on a stretcher.” Id .
Concussions have always been a problem in contact sports. Unfortunately, high school football is no exception. In fact, high school football is the worst of all contact sports when dealing with concussions. This is an alarming statistic that has caused companies like Riddell to search for a solution.

Parents are pulling their kids from their teams, even in the middle of the season because of the information that has been released over the past decade illuminating a big problem for the game.
Considering a concussion is an injury that(most of the time) temporarily “disrupts” normal function to the brain, one with a concussion must sit out of class because it will be difficult to think, concentrate, remember and learn new material. While sitting out of school may seem joyful, athletes must not do anything involving thinking. This includes being on anything electronic, watching tv, reading and doing puzzles. It is a pretty hard recovery that is most of the time still filled with headaches and nausea. Athletes must become familiar with the long term effects through their coaches as well as being introduced to caution in order to limit the amount of lifetime
Concussions can result in effects such as headaches, change in sleep patterns, dizziness, nausea, blurred vision, loss of consciousness, depression, mood swings, memory less, loss of concentration, and slow reaction time. This can last a few hours to a few weeks and may appear immediately after the blow/ trauma leading to the concussion or may appear after a few days or weeks (Virginia Board of Education Guidelines for Policies on Concussions in Student Athletes). These symptoms, of course, do not get any better when one has been re-concussed. Symptoms could get even worse, and even fatal, when the chances of getting a second concussion are heightened following the
Everything came back fine from the Cat-Scan and the doctors diagnosed me with a mild concussion. I had a foggy feeling for about four days. I rested for about a week before I participated in any physical activity. After about a week 's time I was feeling back to normal as far as I could tell. I started football three weeks after this first concussion.
Each year high school athletes suffer from concussions more frequently. In the article, “After a Concussion it’s Unclear When -or if- High School Athletes Should Return to Action,” by Sam McDowell, this issue is addressed. The problem faced with this issue is many states are forming new laws and regulations on how soon athletes who have suffered concussions can return to the game.
In the high school sports community, concussions remain a high threat to the athletes who do not receive sufficient awareness and the knowledge they need about concussions. Even though sports, such as football, are implementing penalties and different policies to try to reduce the amount of concussions that occur, high school student-athletes still suffer concussions at an alarming rate. Concussions remain a serious public health concern, as approximately 1.6 to 3.8 million sports-related concussions are estimated to occur each year. (Covassin, Elbin, Sarmiento 2012). However, North Carolina has taken the initiative to increase the student-athlete 's education of concussions within the high school community.
These are long term effects of concussions. Miss diagnosing high school concussions has become a major concern, especially to those involved with athletics. Sports in general are getting more physical which is a reason to have a strong concussion prevention program. Concussion testing needs to be federally funded, schools need to provide it, and rules in sports need to be more strict regarding hits and contact. The majority of schools who do not offer in depth concussion testing is due to a lack of money.
THE INCREASING NUMBER OF CONCUSSION IN ATHLETES ARE DETRIMENTAL TO THE FUTURE OF SPORTS In the recent years, concussions have become a common accident related to various types of sports around the globe. A concussion is a traumatic injury of the brain, they can also be as a result of a sudden blow on the body. Such a blow may cause the head to jerk back and forth in a rapid motion. This may cause a bounce or twist within the skull, which may over stretch the brain, cause cell damage and alter chemical functioning within the brain.
It was June 2nd of 2013, and like most days of that time of year I was off to an afternoon soccer game. I has only recently returned to playing sports after being out for three months because of a concussion, and I was so happy to be back doing what I loved.
