The stories Making Sarah Cry and Don’t Give Up the Fight, share a common theme which is overcoming obstacles. Sarah, in Making Sarah Cry, overcame the obstacle of being bullied and eventually became friends with the bullies. Ava in Don’t Give Up the Fight, overcame the obstacle of being made fun of because she was the only girl on the track team. While both of these stories share a common theme, the characters' attitudes are completely different. This is because Sarah cried while overcoming obstacles. However, Ava made a plan that made her confident to get the bullies in trouble. In Making Sarah Cry, the theme is overcoming obstacles in many different ways. One way the theme is overcoming obstacles is because of how Sarah was getting bullied throughout the story, but eventually got through it and became friends with the bullies. This is because Ava made a plan with Lindsey and tried to get them in trouble. Ava knew that they got Coach McCoy and Jacob in trouble when the speakers in the school blasted “Would Mr. McCoy and Jacob report to the office immediately?” Also, while Ava was in a race, Jacob and everybody else thought that Ava couldn’t win. However, Ava proved them all wrong by winning the race. Ava then said, “ I had won!” She then got her medal and rubbed her victory in everybody's face.
