English 1301 has definitely grown me as a writer and I can see how I have improved as a writer. One aspect in how my writing has grown is in the ability for myself to expand on my ideas. Honestly, the first paper that was assigned to me frightened me a little bit because of the four page minimum requirement. Never have I wrote a paper this long because I typically just write the basic requirements and never expand and elaborate on my ideas. However, it forced me to expand my ideas and as time progressed, this became very simple to execute.
How am I supposed to write a paper? I constantly think of what words to use and my paper mostly consists of crossed out words. In the article, “Be Prepared: America’s Approach to Teacher Prep is Broken” the author indicates the demand for teachers across the country. A recent poll shows there is little interest among today’s youth in becoming teachers. Over the course of English 1302 at Texas Tech, I feel that my skills as a writer improved significantly. When beginning the class, I knew little about writing a literature review or researched argument. With the help of my instructor’s lectures and the University Writing Center, I was able to effectively get my point across effectively while forming a well developed and well spoken manner. The advice given to me about argumentative essays and integrating sources helped significantly over the course of this class, and the skills learned in English 1302 helped me in other classes this semester when writing as well. One of the things I have learned that influenced me the most was my professor’s advice about an argument.
After reading the first chapter, writing with Style, from “Thinking Well”, by John R. Trimble, he made it seem as if he was writing about my writing when he explained a novice writer. Trimble explains how a novice writer would write by giving examples of how their style of writing looks like. For example, Trimble explains how new writers unconsciously write and how they are not aware of their egocentrism. He states what a novice would have to achieve objectivity, empathy, courtesy and social sensitivity in order for him to have a readable style. Trimble then discusses what makes a veteran writer and how their thinking process reflects their writing situation.

Lejla Hodzic Mrs.Monroe English III(H): Period 3 Journal Reflection-MP1 When first writing in my journal I struggled with how deep to go with my discussion questions and what I should be asking my classmates. I feel that I have struggled with this because I lack confidence on what I am trying to prove or say in my writing. When reading in the past I have never pushed myself to question the author’s purpose or ask questions that invoke much thought. One of my self-defeating emotions patterns is that I always fear of doing writing assignments both in my mother tongue-Vietnamese or my second language-English. Sometimes, my mind goes blank when I start to write. I have no idea what I should write. Even if I’m sitting there for a while, I still wonder “how can I start the essay?” Therefore, I usually put it to the side and say to myself that I need a couple days to explore the idea and I only start to do it when the deadline is coming close.
