In a 1998 study by the National Sleep Foundation reported that 12% of Americans sleeps less than six hours per night. The essay also shows that the percent of diagnoses in sleep orders by 266% and prescription medications prescribed to patients also increased by 293%. During our session, my client indicated how she has gotten back on track with her SMART goals. However, I wanted to focus this week's session more on her sleep pattern, since this has been a concern. Her sleep pattern, which has been most difficult for her to accomplish, has slowly improved. Recording in a journal has helped her to identify what factors have been disrupting her getting an efficient amount of sleep. For instance, she loves watching television and often likes to watch movies or game shows at night.
On average, I go to bed at 3o’clock in the morning and receive four to six hours of rest each night. This pattern generally results in illness, a decrease in performance, and irritability. My hope is to discover strategies to implement in my life from the model to work towards change. At the moment, I am in the precontemplation stage.
What went through my mind was, why study sleep? Over 50 years, scientists have enthusiastically researched into slumber’s biology. Anthropologists have rarely scrutinized the sleep patterns and practices of different cultures, much less those of different classes and ethnic groups in the United States. While investigators readily concede that they don’t yet know why people sleep and dream, they assume that they at least know how people should sleep. Humans sleep in their own way because of both biological and cultural influence.

Sleepless in American is a National Geographic documentary on the lack of sleep Americans are receiving each night. The film starts with the statistic that “40% of American adults are sleep deprived” and followed with different effects of sleep deprivation such as: weight gain, delayed reaction time, depression, anxiety, speeds the growth of cancer, and has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Although, there is no scientific evidence to support the need for sleep, it is an important process that allows our bodies to function properly. Several sleep studies have been performed to understand the effects sleep deprivation has on a person. The participants of the sleep trial only received four hours of sleep per night.
North Korea has been living in a Communist government since 1918 which affected the country economically in a very drastic way. Back in 1930 North Korea had the most advanced economy in continental East Asia but things have changed since the late 1950’s when they stated the spirit of self-reliance which is when their Autarky started. Throughout history, there have been many great leaders who successfully led their countries, organizations, or teams by using their own styles. Some of them worked for peace and justice, while others tried to improve social awareness. Most of them have affected their whole society with their own ideology. But of them all, I like George Washington most and he is my favorite leader.
The darkness of night unveils the hidden cove of possibilities that awaits us in sleep. For some, sleep provides the much needed distraction and replenishment needed to perform our daily routines.
