My name is Jendéya Smith. I am majoring in Dietetics and Nutrition as I would like to become a Registered Dietitian. I have obtained a bachelor's degree in Dietetics and Nutrition. Currently, I am completing a master's degree also in Dietetics and Nutrition. Some of my hobbies/interests include self-care, shopping, fashion, watching movies, and spending time with family/friends. As a part of my training for Advanced Techniques/Lab, I will learn to become an effective nutrition counselor. The qualities of a good counselor I believe I should have is to have confidence, patience, respect, empathy, and non-judgemental. Most importantly, being a good listener is essential.

I allow flexibility in my counseling sessions. Being a good counselor has flexibility in world views and a strong understanding of multicultural issues in clinical practice. Since my client is from Bermuda, I like to understand her values and opinions. Also, I have been able to gain my client's trust and importantly, learned to be genuine and empathetic. In this case, developing an empathetic connection with my client is key to moving forward in the therapeutic process, and is the core of an effective counselor-client relationship. My client has come a long way from her first counseling session. I think she is motivated to make changes because she believes she can. Also, staying active has helped her to live a healthy and happier life, which also helps to keep her mentally aligned. There are two changes I would like to make in the last two counseling sessions. During our session, my client indicated how she has gotten back on track with her SMART goals. However, I wanted to focus this week's session more on her sleep pattern, since this has been a concern. Her sleep pattern, which has been most difficult for her to accomplish, has slowly improved. Recording in a journal has helped her to identify what factors have been disrupting her getting an efficient amount of sleep. For instance, she loves watching television and often likes to watch movies or game shows at night. Another factor is having to frequently urinate throughout the night. So, I developed a plan as to how we can resolve this issue together. Some strategies we discussed were to not drink any liquids after 9 pm and to turn the television off by 10:30 pm. In addition, I wanted her to record in her journal for another week. Since this would be our last session, I informed her to keep continuing to achieve her SMART goals due to her constantly staying motivated and believing in herself that she can improve her health overall.
