Completing Worksheet 1 and 2 was a positive eye opening experience. Through observational data, I was able to confirm and challenge my own assumptions regarding school improvement and equity throughout PSU. Using an equity lens allowed me to ask questions and focus on different elements of PSU culture I found concerning or, believed needed reform. Overall, I’m glad I had the opportunity to take an in-depth look at our school’s health and wellness center. An important aspect of staying happy and healthy requires fully utilizing all the resources available at PSU. Working with an equity lens is all about observations and perception. Being unaware of or, deliberately ignoring an issue does not mean it will cease to exist. It's human nature to avoid issues that don’t directly affect or impact our daily lives. On a college campus that promotes diversity it's vital to examine the different aspects of its culture using an equity lens. I chose to focus on language and how its use impacts the students attending this university. In general, using an equity lens allows you to be more culturally aware and identify concerns and issues that need to be addressed. As members of a minority on campus, it’s easy to claim that we don't have a voice or that it’s hard to create change but, the first step towards meaningful and lasting change is properly identifying the problem. Through the use of an equity lens aids in asking that right questions. From that, a proposal for a plan can be created.
