The spikes in popularity seem to have started from the lead up to the World War II and the cold war decades ago. There are several numbers of popular dystopian novels that contribute to the popularity of this genre especially Brave New World (1932) written by Aldous Huxley that indicates the acceptance of the readers towards this dystopian fiction novel in America and followed by other novels. Outline Imagine being chosen a job for a lifetime, but this job had a lot of pain, and loneliness. Well that what it was like for Jonas. Which makes Jonas being selected to be the receiver of memory is more like a punishment than an honor. Jonas has to deal with the pain that comes from the memories. He is missing out on things others can do.
Jonas felt anger for his father and the pain he feels for the baby twin. On page 168 in the giver,Jonas realized that they been playing a game of war ( Lowry). Jonas feel sad and misunderstood for the boy in war. Jonas sadly understood that no one know what he is feeling. These are like real life because some careless people don 't think about others and think that everything is just a joke.
Furthermore without memories, you can not make responsible decisions. On page 130 of The Giver explained that the Committee of Elders comes to him for advice because he has memories. Jonas asks if they ask for advice often and the Giver says, “Rarely. Only when they are faced with something they have not experienced before.” Without memories, Jonas can not make decisions because he has very little experience.
In Jonas’s society memories are held by one person, The Giver. The Giver is selected by The Committee of Elders after being observed very closely; The Giver is the one who holds all the pain so the people of the community don't have to feel them. According to the novel, the narrator states, “‘Jonas was identified as a possible Receiver many years ago. We have observed him meticulously. There were no dreams of uncertainty”’(Lowry 62).
The Giver had asks Jonas to go home for the day so he wouldn’t have to see him suffering, but instead of leaving, Jonas stays and asks what he can do to help relieve him of so much pain; he asks him to take away some of the pain and some of the memory. During his journey, he faces many difficulties and experiences many problems he did not know existed. Sameness is atrocious because it requires people to follow the rules, even when they believe they are not right, and because people don’t get a choice in the decisions. Sameness is a disadvantage because people always have to follow rules, even when they do not believe it is ethical. Consequently, this caused Jonas to experience a massive amount of melancholy that was excruciatingly difficult for one person to hold on to. The more memories Jonas received, the more he was set apart from society, but he began to lose his emotional touch with people when he experienced his first memory of the brutal actuality of pain. Time perceived itself to be a beautiful aspect of life, but the more time Jonas lived, the less he had the will to. When Jonas leaves the community he accomplishes going to a place with warmth, love, color. Jonas hopes that by leaving the community he is breaking the tradition of the Giver and the Receiver bearing all the memories. .Jonas changes throughout The Giver and as a result, tries to change the community. Although in our society, anyone can get opportunities to make their life great and can prevent some pain from entering their life like physical or heartbreak, but everyone loses someone they love and that’s something no one is able to control.
