I look around at my familiar walls. My entertainment center is placed in front of me. The screen on the television is dark and the dolls that sit on top seem to stare into my soul. It is like they know what is going on and are laughing at me. My window is behind my nightstand and the purple curtains pinned up to the side. The wind was blowing, making the red and brown leaves float around. The house right across from mine looks lifeless. The lights were off and no movement was to be seen. Stepping closer to the window, the light shines on me. The tears begin to swell up. I did not understand what was happening. I took a step back and saw my reflection through the window.
My pajama pants had zebra print on them and my tank top was black. My hair flowed over my shoulders. I could not believe how long it was getting. Mom used to put my hair in a ponytail and chop it off. She loved short hair, but I hated it. I wanted to grow my hair out and finally, she let me. The leaves distracted me as they blew by. Terrible thoughts started to run through my mind again. It was first my cat and now it was my parents. I turn around and walk to the door. Maybe my neighbors were home. I jump slightly as I see Maggie. She was sitting on the second step, looking up at me with her big green eyes. Relief floods through me. I carefully step down beside her and pick her up. She must have left my room sometime during the night and hid until now. She purrs at me and rubs her face against my chest. I smile happily as I feel her soft fur against me. At least now I have someone. I walk down the rest of the stairs with her in my arms. She curls up to me and I feel her heartbeat against my arm. As I got to the door, the quietness seemed to overwhelm me. I unlock the door and open it. The breeze was slightly chilly as I stepped out onto the concrete. The concrete was cold on my bare feet and I
