You are in the paleolithic era, wearing nothing but animal skin to protect you from the elements. You go back to your tribe and find that a woman comes back with the majority of the food for the tribe. You and the rest of the tribesmen eat than go and pray to a goddess, thanking her for giving birth to you and the world you live in. Women and Goddesses were worshipped for their life giving abilities and beauty. In many creation stories from many indigenous peoples, a goddess was the one that either created the world ro people, or both. The majority of work required to sustain a tribe by bringing food and water was carried out by women. Men only collected up to 20% of the tribes total food source with women collecting the rest. It is possible that women were the “hearts’ of the tribe. What I mean by that is the people confided in them because it was up to the women to gather the majority of the food even though they remained close to the tribe. Women were also responsible for taking care of the children. “Working unceasingly during the daylight hours, women regularly produce as much as 80 percent of the tribes total food intake, on a daily basis” (Miles 34). Depictions of women show them having powers of nurturing. Women may have thought of the tribe as their children. Men may have been the defendants of tribes and they relied on women to keep them in good health. The men may have even respected the women. Also, women may have been the social component of the tribes; they brought food to the people, they nurtured them, and may have even brought a sense of companionship to every member. It would be made out of plant fibers to make not only clothing but also mats. This led to the use of wool and fibers being option of clothing material aside from animal skin. It was because of women that societies developed new skills as well as establish communities that led to population growth as well as possibly started trade with neighboring communities. It is crucial to think that is it is possible that women could have had a point in history where they dominated men. Today, most of the world leaders are men...but women are starting to become world leaders as well. Men dominating over women has been present throughout all of recorded history. But today, we might be slowly leaning toward an egalitarian society with no discrimination of class or sex. There are some large female figures that are worshipped today. For example, Mary, the mother of Jesus, is worshipped by over 1 billion catholics. Riane Eisler’s The Chalice and the Blade says that “Equality between the sexes was the general norm of the neolithic” (Eisler 12); If equality was achieved before, what is stopping us from achieving it
