John wanted to celebrate so he took that afternoon off from MAIN and wandered down along the Charles River with a beer, and starting thinking about Claudine. While sitting next to the taxi driver John saw a billboard portrait of a handsome man with a prominent brow and flashing eyes. John recognized him as the hero of modern Panama, Omar Torrijos. A firm defender of both Panama’s right of self rule and of its claims to sovereignty over the Panama Canal was one of the reasons behind Torrijos popularity. Panama was a part of Colombia when the French engineer Ferdinand De Lesseps, decided to build a canal through Central American isthmus, to connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. During the first years of the twentieth century, the United States demanded that Colombia sign a treaty turning that isthmus over to a North American consortium which Coombia refused. Roosevelt sent a warship down to threaten the local population. The Colombian government released the land and Roosevelt declared Panama an independent nation. The first Canal Treaty was signed by U.S. Secretary of State Hay and a French engineer, Philippe Bunau Varilla, where Panama was forced to leave Colombia in order to serve the United States. Panama was ruled by the wealthy families. They deemed necessary to ensure that their country promoted U.S. interests, where Panama’s rulers interpreted U.S. interests to mean putting down any populist movement that smacked off socialism. The governments did to feel that US interests were promoted by improving the lives of the people who lived in poverty or served as slaves to the corporations.
