Pandora, from Hesiod’s poem Works and Days from the Theogony, and Eve, from the book of Genesis, are seen as perpetrators of all that is deceitful and are blamed for every evil in the world. Pandora and Eve were both said to be the first woman created in the stories they originate. Both of them brought ruin and misfortune upon men, who were living in a world that was free from evil and sin before their actions that caused the downfall of mankind. They brought ruin and misfortune because they both gave into a form of temptation due to their curiosity. They both disobeyed their god; Pandora opened the jar and Eve ate from the forbidden tree. Despite their similarities, the story of Pandora and Eve are not similar and differ from each other greatly. The way they were created, their purpose of their creation, how they lead to the downfall of mankind, and the concept of hope in their stories are different from each other. Pandora and Eve were created differently and were given unique gifts from their creators. Pandora was created by Hephaestus, the god of fire and blacksmith, who created her out of earth and water. In the myth of Pandora, she lets all the misfortunes into the world, but she closes the lid on hope. This shows that hope cannot and does not exist in the world, leaving mankind to be pessimistic. Mankind would have to endure the hardships for the rest of eternity. Zeus shows his authority over mankind and does not let them escape the misfortunes Pandora had let loose into the world. In the story of Eve, even though she brought original sin into the world, there is still hope for mankind. Jesus in the later future would be the ultimate sacrifice for the sins of all mankind.
