In Parable of the Sower Octavia Butler Defines family as important but scarce. The only real family she has leaves her. First Keith who destroys the family by leaving not once not twice but three times. Keith steals money and guns which then leads to her dad beating him. After Keith dies Laurens dad goes missing . Her father was the only family she could trust and After the disappearance Cory and Laurens other brothers die in the fire set off by the drug addicts, who enjoy setting fires for the fun of it. Even her best friend Joanne moves on to find more with her life. Octavia I feel reveals untrustworthy family and friends, which I completely agree with.
