Romeo and Juliet’s Parent Figures Romeo and Juliet were two teenagers who had fallen in love with each other, despite their ongoing family feud. So, they were not able to turn to their families for help and advice on their relationship. Instead, they sought help from Friar Lawrence, and Juliet’s Nurse. They stepped in to the roles of Romeo’s dad, and Juliet’s mother, when their real parents could not help. Friar Laurence and the Nurse were very important characters, who helped Romeo and Juliet with their forsaken love, as if they were their own children. \ Friar Laurence was the holy man of the city of Verona. He was basically a second father to Romeo. He guided and supported him throughout the whole play when his father would not. Friar Laurence did more for Romeo then anyone else ever did. She was a mother figure to Juliet, and like the Friar, supported her when her own mom would not. The Nurse acted as a messenger for Romeo and Juliet. She was the only person to know about their wedding besides Friar Laurence. She even wanted them to spend their wedding night together saying “Hie you to church. I must another way, to fetch a ladder, by the which your love must climb a bird's nest soon when it is dark. I am the drudge and toil in your delight, but you shall bear the burden soon at night” (II.IV .77-81). She described how Romeo would get into Juliet’s room, and also hinted about their sex life at the same time. The Nurse was actually important in a different way. She helped Juliet become her own woman. When Juliet was supposed to marry Paris, but refused, she went to the Nurse for advice. The Nurse had betrayed her, and told her the best option is to just go ahead and marry the county. That is how Juliet realized she has to break away from the Nurse, and rely on herself only.
