Brought together by the feud of their families, later resolved by their deaths. In the play Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, the Nurse is a momentous figure who serves as various roles such as comedic relief, a confidante and a mother-like figure to Juliet. While focusing on this, her characteristic and actions show the theme of idealistic love vs responsibility. The Nurse’s comedic relief shows the contrast between the tragedy of the play. Furthermore, the Nurse and Juliet have a mother and daughter relationship, both physically and emotionally. The author uses this relationship to show the contrast with Juliet’s relationship with her birth mother. We are aware that physically, the Nurse was Juliet’s wet Nurse and Nursed her throughout her whole nurturing phase. Which would suggest how the Nurse knows Juliet’s birthdate and age. When the mother questions the Nurse if she is of knowledge to Juliet’s birthday, the Nurse replies with “On Lammas Eve at night she shall be fourteen,” and “Come Lammas Eve at night she be fourteen” I believe that author was showing the difference in the two character’s relationships with Juliet. As Juliet’s birth mother can't recognize Juliet’s age nor is of remembrance of Juliet’s birthday, where the Nurse not only fed her during her childhood but is an acknowledgment of an important date. Another example of the contrast between the Nurses relationship versus Lady Capulet’s is their advice of marriage of which they give to Juliet.
