Parents or guardians may raise their children in various ways. Each way is different, including secure, insecure, anxious, ambivalent, insecure, avoidant, and disorganized. secure being the best, disorganized being the worst. The two main characters Mariam and Laila, in A Thousand Splendid Suns, experience one or a mixture of these in their story. Mariam’s relationship with her mother is insecure, and her father is anxious and ambivalent. These two ways of parenting are different in their own ways. Laila's relationship with her mother is insecure and disorganized; her father is secure. These two ways of parenting are drastically different. When they become adults, they maintain their sense of identity and like to be connected with others. Feeling secure within themselves and able to make connections with others pretty easily, they are also able to be trusted by others. Mariam, in the story, has no secure relationship. They can have emotional hunger and a lack of love. A good example could be Mariam's father. Jalil only sees Mariam a couple of hours a week; the relationship is on Jalil’s mind because Mariam is isolated from others.
