Since everything starts at home, we should start there as well to fix this. I truly believe that we should start parenting programs for minority families in Boston. What should be done is teach the parents what types of behaviors their children have and for what reason and what could be done to improve their academic achievements. We could teach the parents to not be so harsh on their children, that if they believe academic achievement is important, make that stick in their head and not that they have to stay home cleaning or go out and make money. As said before, the parenting programs will be given to minority parents/families, but it is open to anyone. This idea is being put to place because we see a high percentage academic achievement and college enrollment in rich, white families, but not so much in minority families. The classes will be given twice or three times a week, and every two weeks the families will come in to speak about ways they could improve in and what they have done. The plan would go through as long as families truly believe that this is true and there must be a change. Not only will this plan solve the issue of minorities not being enrolled into college, or academically achieving their goals, but it’ll also help the relationship between the family, making the bond stronger.
