Parenting Styles By Anuola Sattin And Nurmi

The most important information guardians should know, in order to effectively raise children, is the difference in parenting styles and what each style my cause in maturing children’s behavior. According to a study on a population of 14-year-olds by Anuola, Sattin, and Nurmi, it is present in children’s behavior academically whether or not they are being parented in the most efficient method, among other variables of course. Assessing behavior and parenting styles in conjunction can, however, inform parents how to be more efficient in the lives of their children. There are two general qualities caregivers possess or lack, in one capacity or another, to create a good or bad environment when raising children: “demandingness” and “responsiveness” (Anuola, Sattin, & Nurmi, 2002). Responsiveness is drawn from parents’ abilities to show caring qualities to their children, such as “warmth, acceptance, and involvement” (Anuola, Sattin, & Nurmi, 2002). Combinations of these two qualities create the parenting styles, or “Pillar Theory” of Diana Baumrind (Darling, 1999). There are four general parenting styles defined by Baumrind, but each style can be further broken down into other sub-styles or defined with more direct specificity on a case-by-case basis (Darling, 1999).
One general style of parenting, the indulgent parent, allows little structure but is very responsive (Darling, 1999). An example of this style of parenting may be the stereotypical hippie, allowing children to almost create their own rules and responsibilities, not placing many requirements or demands
