Both parenting styles are acknowledged but the impact of those who neglect their children is beyond imaginable. Bringing a child into the world is a gift; therefore, they should be treated with love and compassion. Sadly, there are people who disregard the importance of showing their kids these qualities. There are cases of horrible negligence all over the news as shown in the article, “I’m sick of watching the news and learning about people abusing their kids, neglecting them, and leaving them in cars (during the sweltering heat) with the windows rolled up” (Leder). The visual reference within the sentence is quite chilling.
In the novel The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, Rex and Rosemary Walls exemplify uninvolved parenting. Kendra Cherry author of “The Four Styles of Parenting” discusses how uninvolved parents tend to neglect the children and their needs. “When we tried to help him he cursed and lurched at us swinging his fist” (122). Rex practically avoids the kids and neglects any sort of help although he was in need and he also almost ended up hitting one of the kids. Another thing Cherry talks about is that uninvolved parents are detached from their children’s lives.
While they provide for basic needs like food and shelter, they are uninvolved in their children's lives. The degree of involvement may vary considerably. Some uninvolved parents may be relatively hands-off with their kids, but may still have some basic limits such as curfews. Free range parenting is the best and most effective way to raise children in the current society. Free range parenting allows for children to discover the world around them. This method allows for children to become more independent and self confident without the constant supervision of parents. Giving the necessary freedom to the children makes them become stronger individuals as they grow up. Free range parenting does not translate to “hands off’ parenting or abusive/neglecting parents.

Parenting Among Asian American Families Asian parenting emphasizes three significant themes (Chao & Tseng, 2002; Julian, McKenry, & McKelvey, 1994). One of the main themes among Asian parenting is that of family as the center. Asian American parents emphasize the importance of family and family interdependence. Each Asian society has its unique beliefs of the family and family roles, family responsibilities, and family membership.
Moving forward, according to our class textbook value “pertains to beliefs and attitudes that provide direction to everyday living” (Corey, et al., 2015, p. 12). As learned through my peers, it is important for me to have a present awareness of the probable moments when counter transference may be triggered to the point where I may even try to impose my beliefs on a client. Based on my cultural origins, some pressing values exist. Unconditional love is on the forefront. In my perspective, Christianity revolves around accepting God’s unconditional love and extending it towards others.
The Love of Parents Being a parent is a very complicated and stressful job to have. There is many different ways to be a parent to a child, some work better than others, some children cooperate, while others rebell. There is no such thing as a flawless parent, although, some methods of parenting are a significant amount better than other methods. Despite the effort that a parent puts into teaching their children to be well mannered, mature adults, there is always some extent of damage that is done in the process.
One of the biggest fears of any parent has to be their child falling into the habit of using and abusing substances. According to the textbook, Parenting: A Dynamic Perspective by George W. Holden, the most problematic substances are cigarettes, alcohol, and illegal drugs (primarily being marijuana). Monitoring the Future, a survey presented by Holden, surveyed 46,500 high school students. This survey revealed that 20% of seniors smoked cigarettes within the last 30 days. In regards to alcohol, 16.6% of students ranging within the ages of 12-16 participated in binge drinking (consuming an average of 4.5 alcoholic beverages in a short period of time) in the last month, while 63.7% college students ages 18-22 reportedly drank alcohol, and 43.6%
Barnyak and McNelly (2009) conducted a study on teachers and administrators’ beliefs and practices when it comes to parent involvement using the Bandura’s social cognitive therapy of self-sufficiency (1995). Teachers and administrators were surveyed using the adapted version of The Parent Involvement Inventory published by the Illinois State Board of Education (1994). This quantitative study included 92 practicing male and female grades K-12 teachers and 7 administrators in an urban school district in Pennsylvania who were part of a statewide parent involvement initiative during the2004-2005 school year.
