In the book Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer describes and investigates the true story of Christopher McCandless, a youthful graduate of Emory university in Atlanta. In september of 1922, Chris’s body is found in an abandoned bus in the middle of the Alaskan wilderness. Prior to his death at 24 years of age, McCandless grew up in the well to do suburb of Annandale Virginia with his family and he had always been a terrific athlete and scholar from the start. Before moving on to college, Christopher goes on a summer long road trip across the country in which he discovers that his father Walter had secretly maintained a relationship with his first wife even after marrying his second wife which Chris’s mom. Christopher McCandless, the main focus from Jon Krakauer’s Into the Wild observes the factors that impacted Chris McCandless to his unfortunate death at the age of 24 in August of 1992 on Stampede Trail, Alaska in attempts to live off the land. Richard Russo who grew up to write his own memoir Elsewhere describing his “American childhood, as lived in the Fifties by a lower-middle class that seems barely to exist anymore” (Russo, 12, 2012). Russo grew up with his mother, Jean Russo, who had Obsessive compulsion disorder, which he tries make sense of the guilt associated with his mother after her death. The two had been impacted developmentally different by the chronosystem and interaction of the microsystems. The unalike interactions explain the differing outcome of the two.
In The Glass Castle, Rosemary and Rex Walls display a very uninvolved parenting style due to the many occasions they have neglected their children’s’ needs and put them in harm’s way. Some of the signs of an uninvolved parent are when they neglect their children’s personal needs, lack of communication and do not have very many demands. (Cherry, The Four Styles of Parenting.) The Walls children are always and have always looked after themselves and found ways to survive. The kids are always hungry and in constant need of food, but they are left to fend for themselves.
Chris McCandless was a man who went beyond social norms, by going back to nature to prove he could pave his own way. Jon Krakauer later following Chris’ death explains in his novel, Into the Wild, how Chris’ personal experiences affected his personality and thoughts. Jon then characterizes Chris McCandless as a self-reliant, and inspiring person with many stories of the times he had interacted with people as well as how people had personally felt about him once he had passed. McCandless’ self-reliance is proved by his character and his will to do his best no matter where he is. This is shown by examining his anger over how, “[his parents] think that [Chris would] actually let them pay for [his] law school.”

The important question that people would ask is what made him leave everything to go to Alaska? John Krauer shared a bit of why Chris left which was due to family drama. Two decades later Carine McCandless, Chris's sister, wrote a book called “The Wild Truth'' to share the personal struggles she and Chris went through to find their own truth in different ways.
In the novel “Into The Wild” written by Jon Krakauer, a man named Christopher McCandless ventures into Alaska’s unknown territory in search of his spirit. McCandless begins this journey immediately following his graduation from Emory University; similar to a nationwide road trip taken right after his high school graduation. Growing up, McCandless lived a very privileged life. Many would say he was ungrateful, selfish and stupid for his actions and motives. Others would gaze upon him as a hero and wish they could have the courage he did to chase his dream and be so passionate until his death.
In the memoir, The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, the Walls family is considered homeless and they are constantly moving from place to place. They constantly find themselves either with a somewhat decent amount of money or at times, no money at all. Jeannette, being one of four children always follows along with and listens to her parents and eventually notices that their family does things very differently than most other families. As Jeannette explains her childhood and how she is being raised by her parents, it is clear to see how different Rex and Rosemary’s parenting style is compared to the parenting style of other parents. Since their parenting style is so different, it seems that it affects their children in a negative way throughout their childhood, but in the end it makes Jeannette become a better and more successful person.
In Jon Krakauer’s narrative, Into the Wild, 22 year old Chris leaves his family behind to venture off to unexplored scenes all over the U.S. From start to end, he meets various individuals who take him in and teach him essential life lessons. Chris makes his way through the states to find himself in Alaska, and resides in the wilderness for about 3 months, where he eventually passes away. When the McCandless family receives this information, they mourn and question why Chris would abandon them without reason. Chris McCandless has been perceived as irresponsible and ungrateful for leaving his seemingly perfect family, when in reality, he was damaged from past traumas and naive because of his young age.
A common thought among adolescents is the dream to finally leave home and discover who they are; I certainly share this dream. Though the concept is common, the reasons are unique; The differences in character and circumstances define who a person is. What may appear reasonable to some could very well be completely irrational to another. The story of Chris McCandless as reported by Jon Krakauer in the biographic novel Into the Wild is no exception. From the events in his childhood to the conflict with his father, we can see that Chris McCandless, a young man still discovering himself, became disillusioned with the structure of society and desired nothing more than to “no longer be poisoned by civilization” (163).
The Father-Son Relationship For both McCandless and Krakauer, the combination of trying to please a difficult-to-please father, resenting authority, and discovering their fathers’ own great failings leads to an almost insurmountable rift. Krakauer was able to forgive his father only once he was no longer the same man. McCandless died before he had the opportunity to grow out of his anger.

The permissive parenting style best exemplifies Rex and Rosemary Walls’ parenting because they rarely discipline their children, they act more like their kids friends than their parents, and they do not believe in their children’s success. Rex and Rosemary didn’t concern themselves when punishing their children for doing bad things. “It was self -defense, I piped. Dad had always said that self- defense was a justifiable reason for shooting someone” (89). Most parents would have punished their children for shooting someone, so parents who wouldn’t are considered permissive parents.
There are many children in the world who are being put behind bars and detained for alleged wrongdoing without protections they are entitled to. Throughout the world, children are charged and sentenced for actions that should not be considered as adult crimes. Here in the United States, the minimum age of criminal responsibility is age 12. Law enforcement officials and those in the juvenile justice system nationwide tend to mistreat underage individuals by trying cases while working through the lens of an adult. Unfair punishments are still handed down domestically, which is in violation of Supreme Court law.
