5 Causes Of A Dysfunctional Family The author of “Into The Wild” John Krakauer shares part of the story of a young man named Chris McCandless about how he gave up everything to hitchhike to Alaska. The important question that people would ask is what made him leave everything to go to Alaska? John Krauer shared a bit of why Chris left which was due to family drama. Two decades later Carine McCandless, Chris's sister, wrote a book called “The Wild Truth'' to share the personal struggles she and Chris went through to find their own truth in different ways. Billie would say to Chris after her husband would get in a fight, “If it wasn't for you I wouldn't be with your father” (“Return to the Wild ''). Billie was very unhappy with herself and marriage and decided to blame it on Chris. When Carine was a teenager it was just Billie and Walt would take a trip to the family cabin. Uncle Travis was drunk and was done painting a room and all of sudden Uncle Travis forced himself onto Carine to have sex with him while she was in her bed trying to sleep. The next day Walt and Billie acted like nothing happened and never did or said anything after that horrific experience for Carine. Years later Carine is an adult, and learns from Billie, and Carine’s mother, that Travis grabbed her butt inappropriately. Carrine responds, “‘Can I believe that?’After what he did to me, you actually want me to stand here and feel sorry for you because he grabbed your ass? Are you fucking kidding me? I was just a kid and you and dad did nothing!’” (McCandless 213). Carine felt betrayed by her own mother because when her Uncle Travis tried to have sex and the day after, Carine's mom and dad acted like nothing. Years later Carine’s mother was complaining that her own brother was assaulting her. The one thing Carine's parents said to her was to tell them when she had sex and how they trust her judgment. When Carine had sex with Jimmy, her high school boyfriend, Carine’s parents turned their back on her by saying, “‘You’ve completely disgraced this family!’ He said, ‘You’re a whore.
