Marshall Davis Jones slam poem, iPERSON, describes the problems of trying to remain human in a world filled with technological devices. Throughout the poem, the poet demonstrates how technology has taken over our lives without us realizing how far away we are from reality. Jones satirizes society’s dependence on technology and social networking by using parody, exaggeration, and irony in order to attack and mock our current world and our device obsession.

Jones satirizes our digital world by using parody to raise awareness of our 2D world. As humans, we crave connection and relationships with the people around us. However, the author mentions the difficulties to connect with what once was considered the real world. He says that our “smile is 50% genuine and 50% genuine HD” (27-28), implying how superficial or unrealistic we present ourselves to be. He imposes that we evaluate each other based on our appearance on social networks even though our images are fabricated, hence the irony. We are looking at each other through screens rather than accurately depicting a person for who they are, building a false judgment. Near the end of the poem, the poet realizes that we may have lost our humanity. Only when our technology is advanced enough can it “make us human again” (82). Similarly to a person, technology is becoming more of a mortal than an actual human being. We are dependent upon technology to fix all our problems, even though technology has created the problem in the first place. The poet expresses the irony in an all-consuming internet life that has eventually altered our perception and judgment.
