Part 2 for Great Gatsby test In the book “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the theme of the excerpt is that the absence of a person who strives to make life more entertaining to the masses, causes life to seem bleak to others. This theme fits into the overall message of the novel as when Gatsby was still alive people from all over the Island and the City would flock to the Gatsby residence to enjoy the lavish parties he threw. When Gatsby gets murdered the world seems to grow gray, as the parties officially stop and people realize that the parties are over, the world seems to go back to the way it was before the parties began, and the entertaining life that once grasped onto so many people ceases to exist. The point of view of Nick is one that best illustrates how the passing of Gatsby affects the people who were once attending his parties as a means of both entertainment and escape.
