People of today are now considering a surgical technologist’s job as one of the most promising careers in the field of health care. As a matter of fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the number of surgical technologists to increase 30% by 2022. This leaves behind all the other occupations with their projected 11% growth. The BLS projection simply indicates that the said profession is continually growing which brings along great news for many aspirants. Another thing that might entice a lot of surgical tech wanna-bes is the good compensation they can enjoy.
I recently underwent emergency surgery for a ruptured appendix in the hospital where I’m currently employed, receiving anesthesia from providers I had shadowed just a few weeks prior. Although I wouldn’t say I recommend the experience, being the patient gave me a new perspective, and it was eye-opening to have insight into both sides of the operating room and my entire hospitalization. Even though the anesthesia team knew my medical background, they were still comforting and professional in describing the anesthesia plan. Encountering the bedside manners of my healthcare team emphasized the importance of being calm and knowledgeable for patients and their families, regardless of health literacy level. Caring for others, often in high-stress situations, is what I enjoy about being an ICU nurse.
My career choice is being a phlebotomist. Which that is a type of nurse. They surgically open or puncture a vein that lets them to be able to withdraw blood or to introduce a fluid. Being a phlebotomist would be a big part in everyday life, I just want to do something in a nursing field.
The doctors told my parents that I was in a coma due to a brain aneurysm and two strokes in the right side of my brain. The right side of my brain had expanded and filled with blood. After eating through a pipe that connected to my stomach for almost a year, I finally woke up. The first words that escaped my mouth were “tengo hambre.” Although, this event left me partially paralyzed from the right side I continued to strive.
Research Question The introduction of the lobotomy procedure to North America was primarily due to its endorsement by famed neurologist Walter Freeman in the early 20th century. Despite a barrage of criticism and hostility from both psychoanalysts and a small portion of the medical community who questioned the ethics of the procedure. However, Freeman’s procedure success was mainly due to his reputation as one of the nation’s best neurologists. Freeman was a professor of neurology at George Washington University and performed the first lobotomy in the United States.

The first city that was considered the “shock city” was actually Manchester, England. It grew very quickly, and it was the world’s first industrialized city and the home of the cotton industry, cottonopolis - a metropolis centered on cotton trading. Same as Manchester, Chicago was also the “shock city” of North America because of its rapid growth. Both cities were industrial cities, Chicago rose from a struggling village sunk in the middle of a grassland creek to a metropolis city.
During the twentieth- century, lobotomy became a popular procedure performed on patients with neurosis such as schizophrenia, bi-polar mood disorder, personality disorder, etc. Many scientists, especially at the time, argued that poking holes through parts of the brain and swishing parts around helps make patients more calm and cooperative. I predict that lobotomy had no benefits for the patient but rather in a dissociative state to appear calm. By understanding the history of lobotomy, patients' experience and stories, and alternatives we can grasp a better view in how lobotomy was unethical and ineffective.
