Pearl Harbor was an American naval base near Honolulu, Hawaii. On December 7, 1941 Japan, attacked Pearl Harbor. Hideki Tojo was the Prime Minister of Japan at the time of the bombard. The attack only lasted for around two hours. In those devastating two hours, the Japanese demolished nearly 20 American naval vessels and more than 300 airplanes. More than 2,000 American sailors and soldiers were killed and 1,000 were wounded in the attack. The day after the attack, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan. Germany and Italy, Japanese’s allies, declared war on the United States three days later. The United States placed trade embargoes and economic sanctions against Japan. The United States thought that if Japan did not have admission to money, goods, and especially critical supplies like oil, then Japan would not continue to inflate its territory. If Japan did not bombard Pearl Harbor, the United States would not have declared war as rapidlt as they did. The United States still would have been involved in World War II, just a little later. Japan hoped that Germany would obtain control of Europe and this would pressure the United States into negotiating. At the time, Japan was attempting to take over land in Southeast Asia. President Roosevelt was waiting for the right time to pose Congress to go to war with Japan because of their expansion in Asia and Germany’s expansion in Europe. At some point, Japan thought this would go against the United States’ interests and they would go to war at some point.
