Male are thought to be adventurous, aggressive, strong whereas females are to be affectionate, attractive, shy and sexy. While I highly identify with my feminine gender characteristics, at times l possess masculine characteristics like confidence, ambition, and sometimes aggression.
Of all the 70 scientific studies Tannen could have chosen to talk about, the number of which she releases later in her paper, her choice of these two serves to demonstrate how biased and varied in results the scientific studies on this topic have been in the past. This helps Tannen justify the need for her article on the subject as it gives reason to why the issue on which gender speaks more still has not yet been resolved. Later in her essay, Tannen uses the results of a survey done by Campbell Leaper and Melanie Ayres on the results of 70 studies published in scientific journals several times. Her first use of their results follows her statements on the studies talked about earlier in this paper, noting that they “found that counting words yielded no consistent differences”. In Esperanza Santiago’s autobiographical novel When I was Puerto Rican I learn about the lifestyle of a Jibara/o. Esperanza Santiago’s nickname, Negi, can be considered a sign of endearment which adds cultural meaning to the whole. The whole as in the Puerto Rican estate ravaged by the imperialistic grasps of the United States like many other Latino countries. Negi takes me through a journey looking through her eyes as a Jibara and how it transitions over into something else when she’s forced to move to the US. I will try to understand just what it means to be a Jibara and what it means for that gender role?
The person in the Crucible, other than the Salem girls, that I believe caused the trials is Mrs. Putnam, Thomas Putnam 's wife. There are 3 reasons why I suspect of this, the first, is about her beloved seven children who unfortunately passed away. Mrs. Putnam blames a witch for causing the untimely death of her children, which leads to disastrous effects. The second reason is that she starts a witch hunt and creates the atmosphere of mistrust and doubt in Salem when she spreads rumors of witches. This causes the whole town to go wild and start pointing fingers at neighbors, enemies, and friends.
Tannen illustrates a small talk that gathers men and women. During chatting, one woman is quiet, but her husband is talkative. Finally, the small talk turns out the argument on who is the talker at home. Tannen analyzes men’s and women’s opinions; then she concludes that “although American men tend to talk more than women in public situation, they often talk less at home” (263).

Deborah Tannen, a University of California graduate, got her PhD in linguistics at Georgetown University; there she studied the communication between men and women. Tannen has published over one hundred articles and wrote over twenty books, including You Just Don’t Understand: Women and Men in Conversation (1990), which spent almost four years on the New York Times best seller list and was translated into twenty-nine languages. The article Sex, Lies and Conversation appeared in the Washington Post in 1990 and gives insight to how opposite sexes communicate with each other. From an early age we are programed to play and be friends with the same gender as our own.
Gender roles play an important role in A Raisin in the Sun. During the time A Raisin in the Sun was written the idea of set in stone positions in a household and society were common. Women were supposed to do house jobs, keep their mouths shut, and support their husbands’ decisions and men were seen as the headman or boss. A Raisin in the Sun shows readers a window into the world where those gender roles have a twist on them. Women in the time of A Raisin in the Sun were supposed to be subservient to men.
The use of gender language in japan has placed men and women in a certain way by controlling, dominating, or patronizing each other by the use of the language. According to Murasaki Shikibu, during time periods men thought of women differently. For instance, during the Heian period “Women should maintain feminine speech and not interfere with men’s affairs.” Then during the Genroku period “Women using male speech are disgusting and should learn to speak tenderly”. During the Edo Period (Mid-Edo period) “women-servants of samurai families used court-ladies” language (Latter half of Edo period) “Court ladies language became standard female language” lastly, Meiji period, Westernization and modernization.
Charlotte Brontë´s novel Jane Eyre is considered one of Britain´s most classical literary work. The story consists of a hybrid of three genres, the Gothic novel, the Romance novel and the Bildungsroman and many critics have praised the novel. Though, the novel got a great deal of good criticism in contemporary time, its immediate reception was controversial. The story plays out during the Victorian period in Britain where the social norms were strict and there was a big gap of equality between the genders. This essay will analyse how the gender roles are portrayed and if they are modern or traditional.

In the book, You Just Don’t Understand, Deborah Tannen (1990) popularized the term “genderlect” to describe the way in which men and women communicate with each other. She suggested that men and women have different styles of conversing, forming two distinct dialects. In a review of Tannen’s book, DeFrancisco (1992) attributed the differing communication styles of men and women to the respective cultures in which they grow up. Because of such gender differences, misunderstanding between men and women creates a gap in the communication process.
