Melba Pattillo Beals was born on the same day of the Pearl Harbor attack. When Melba was born, she was detected scalp infection in which cause multiple medical complications. Her life was at risk due to the fact that she was African American and was not given proper medical care by the doctors. The doctors and nurses did not do much to save newborn Melba. Melba’s mother, Lois, took it to herself to help her daughter survive.
This past Sunday, June 18th, America lost muslim teen, Nabra Hassanen to what most call road rage, and others, a hate crime. Hassanen, accompanied by a group of friends were headed back to a local mosque after a trip to a fast-food restaurant. It was then that they encountered driver Darwin Martinez Torres and an argument erupted. The altercation escalated, resulting in the capturing and death of 17 year old Hassanen. Torres had beaten her with a baseball bat, abducted her, and dumped her body into a lake.
Kehinde Wiley is an American artist, known for his paintings whose subjects are usually African-American men portrayed in heroic poses. Wiley was born in 1977 in Los Angeles, California. He began to train in art schools at a young age with the encouragement and support of his mother. In 1999, he received his BFA from the San Francisco Institute of Art, and by 2001, Kehinde had received his MFA from Yale University. After his major schooling, Kehinde moved to Harlem to work at the Studio Museum.

Kimorah is a second-grade general education student from a school in the St. George area of Staten Island, New York. Upon having Kimorah assigned as my student and before meeting her, I learned that through prior assessments it is established that she is on a C reading level, and in the second grade. When I think of second graders, I think of babies that were just born into this world a couple years ago, but among meeting Kimorah I quickly realized that she is a person in every sense of the word. Kimorah is a 7-year-old extroverted girl, who is expressive and full of personality. Consequently, shyness does not affect her, but to break the ice further I decided to conduct a set of fun activities.

Kania Rimu is a goal-setter but more importantly, a go-getter. I met Kania in 2012 while she was in the 9th grade and, she was a very shy and unassuming young lady, very much someone who would blend into the background. In 2015, she is not that girl. As quickly as 2013 rolled in, Kania made a name for herself, by pushing for the chance to take two advanced math classes at the same time. La Bamba, California is very small town with a population that is just under two hundred people. In this small town, there was an auto repair shop, a bakery, a butcher, a grocery store, and a gas station. Other than the houses where the people lived, this was all that La Bamba consisted of. La Bamba was dependant on the crops of the local farmers to feed everybody.
