Within The Crucible, it is evident that people are coerced to lie. This involves both kids and adults, and they mainly do this because of Abigail. During the trials, if you were accused nothing could save you. If you denied it, you would be hung. If you admitted it, you would be hung. If you didn’t say anything, you would be hung. After some research, I have found that it is common for people to admit to crimes they haven’t committed. In the play, it is evident that the members of the community are very religious. These people may feel compelled to confess their sins, even if it is something they haven’t committed. She did take place in witchcraft with the girls, but she didn’t really have a choice. Tituba was a slave, and she wasn’t supposed to say no to them. Tituba wasn’t as smart as some of the other people, and didn’t realize what she was doing was wrong. When the girls were confronted about it, they immediately turned on Tituba. Of course, Tituba was denying everything, but eventually gave in and said she was wanting to do it, resulting in jail time. There were other townspeople that were accused of witchcraft. During the interrogation, they were lied to, threatened, yelled at, and promised immunity if they confessed. Four of the five agreed to confess on camera, but the other one didn’t. The kids remained in jail for years, but later on the actual killer came forward and said he acted alone. Not only do the defendants have to say “I did it”, they also have to explain how. Most false confessions happen because the interrogator coerces the defendant to confess, whether they did it or not. During the case, the boys were between the ages of 14-16, which makes it easier to coerce them to confession. Some believe the confessions shouldn’t be used because of errors. For example, they would say they used a rock to cause a head wound, then the rock would turn to a brick, but it actually wasn’t caused by either of these. Errors in the confession should have showed that what they are saying isn’t entirely
