Imagine a person training, working hard to make his or her dreams of becoming a professional athlete come true. The person dreamed of this since they were a little kid. Then, the person realizes they are not good enough. The person decided to take performance enhancing drugs to make them better. How would you feel if you were an athlete who works hard and becomes great and then you see someone take steroids? That wouldn’t make you feel good about yourself. One of the biggest problems in professional sports is that athletes take performance enhancing substances or drugs to make themselves better. In “Performance Enhancing Drugs in Sports Fast Facts”, the article states, "Anabolic steroids are natural and synthetic substances that help build muscle mass, enabling athletes to train harder and recover quickly from strenuous workouts" (Performance Enhancing Drugs). This shows that steroids are used to speed up the process of becoming stronger. It is true that steroids speed up the process of becoming stronger, the result of using substances and drugs is that they will have a bad effect on a person’s body and a person’s mental health. Also steroids can hurt sports. According to some studies steroid use could lead to cancer, heart failure and even cardiovascular problems. Some studies also show that steroids could lead to depression and “roid rage” (Jacobson). In the article “Performance- Enhancing Drugs: An Overview”, Kenneth Jost states, "Those who oppose their use claim that these drugs are bad for sports and pose a health risk to athletes who use them"(Jost). This shows that not only these drugs are bad for athletes bodies but are also bad for sports. This proves that performance- enhancing substances should be banned from sports. Performance-enhancing substances should banned in all sports. An athlete who works hard for what they love to do should be remembered, not someone who was great but was great because of steroids. The commissioners, coaches and all athletes of sport must prevent and ban all performance-enhancing substances in all sports so athletes do not get hurt and so everything is fair.
