In the novel, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, the main character is Charlie and he is a protagonist in the story. Charlie is a freshman in high school who doesn’t have any friends. Charlie loves to read, is a straight A student and is also a very emotional boy. Charlie is also the type of person who likes to analyze everyone such as, “Bridget who is crazy...Carl who is nice to everyone,” (Chbosky 3) and he is also the type who tries to think deeper in situations. Another thing that can be said about Charlie is that he is angry and sad and shows this when he was talking about the counselor, he states, “Then, I started screaming at the guidance counselor that Michael could have talked to me. When Charlie first talked to Patrick at the football game he thought, “He’s a very friendly person,” (19). Charlie became good friends with Patrick and his step-sister Sam. Charlie wrote in the letter that Sam had brown hair and pretty green eyes. Charlie also stated, “Sam had a very nice smile, “(19). One of the last main characters is Bill. Bill is Charlie’s advanced English teacher and he pushes Charlie to participate when he saw he wouldn’t participate in his class even though he knew more than most of the students in his class. Bill is passionate, supportive, and helpful and in the story Charlie states, “...he said that I run my sentences together. I am trying now to practice not to do that,”(14). This shows that he is very helpful to Charlie and is pushing him to be a better writer. In my opinion, one of the main people who made an impact in the story was his Aunt Helen. His Aunt Helen past away when Charlie was young so she is a memory of Charlie’s in the novel, but I don’t think anyone else made such an impact on the story than she did.
