"The Perks of Being a Wallflower" is a novel and movie written by Stephen Chbosky. The novel was Published in 1999 while the movie premiered in 2012. It’s a coming of age story set in the early 90s. The movie and novel where written by the author himself. The perks of being a wallflower is narrated by a teenage boy named Charlie; an introvert. Who is also a freshman in high school who writes about his experiences to a stranger. He is taken under the wing of two seniors who open him up to a new reality.

The movie it plays out as a natural narration. So there isn't as much monologue as the book has; since there is a lack of letters too. Which causes Charlie to seem less of a wallow and a bit more funny and bolder. In the movie they don’t mention the alias that Charlie gives out to conceal his identity. Charlie's sisters abortion is cut out of the movie which removes the connection him and his sister are regaining. After he had told his favorite teacher that her abusive boyfriend hit her and he had told the parents. Another difference is they hold on telling about Charlie's friend Michael killing himself until the party. Where he tells Sam while she makes him a milkshake. So in the movie Charlie's father never smacks him. It doesn’t effect the plot so it being removed doesn’t mean much. In the movie they don’t mention Aunt Helen getting beaten by grandpa, this would have given some more background and tipped off the viewers on where they were headed. In the movie they removed the suicidal poem with a book about Harvey milk, and a mixtape instead. Which doesn’t effect the plot but it leaves out how the friendship came closer together. And the effect the heart-wrenching poem gave to the readers. In the book Charlie starts to get physical with Sam but does not continue. And he doesn’t trigger his awful memory in that scene.
