A dream cannot be accomplished without commitment, and support along your journey to success. This principle is explored in the book The Blind Side, by Michael Lewis. The Blind Side is an inspiring true story about Michael Oher who was a homeless teen that was adopted by the Tuohy family. He found the sport of football during this time and learned many valuable lessons along his journey. Through the perseverance of Michael and the support of his new family, he was able to turn his life around and become a professional football player. In the book, Michael uses the values of hard work and perseverance to reach his goal of becoming a professional football player, coming from a background rid full of poverty. Before being adopted, Michael bounced from foster homes to eventually becoming homeless. “He seldom attended classes and showed no talent or interest in school. Big Mike was going to drop out, said Big Tony. And if he dropped out, he’d be like all his friends who dropped out: dead, in jail, or on the street selling drugs, just waiting to be dead or in jail”(Lewis 30). This quote demonstrates how Michael is going down the wrong path, that many others have gone down. This quote is showing that if he continues down this path his life could end early. The Tuohy family invited micheal to their house to stay, once seeing him on the streets. This eventually lead to the family becoming his legal guardians. They provided him will all the essential of living as well as a welcoming family to fufill his need and desire for a family. “She’d been taking care of his material needs for a good year and a half, and his emotional ones, to the extent he wanted them taken care of, for almost as long. ‘I love him as if I birthed him,’ she said”(Lewis 106). This quote shows That a family does not just provide food shelter, and other material goods, but also a place to work out your problems and allow you to become a better person. These things that the Tuohy family is providing such as support and security coupled with unconditional love allows Michael to get through tough times in him life. This support allows michael to achieve and fufill his dreams of playing college football. Once he leaves for college the Tuohy family decides that they want to help other kids that are struggling and are in the same situation Michael was once in. “We're going to open a foundation that’s only going to help out kids with athletic ability who don't have the academics to go to college” (Lewis 247).
