I am reading Lost Boy by Tim Green and I am on page 152. This book is about a young boy, Ryder Strong, whose mom is severely injured when she gets hit by a truck. Doyle McDonald, a firefighter who was at the scene of the accident, accompanies Ryder in the ambulance to the hospital and stays with him, trying to find his next of kin. The two are trying to raise money for Ryder’s mother’s surgery, as she needs a new heart valve. While all this is happening Ryder is living with his neighbor, Mr. Starr, and trying to find his father, whom he has never met. In this Journal, I will be evaluating and predicting.

This act demonstrates the compassion Doyle has for Ryder, not leaving his side and being a shoulder to lean on. Ryder and Doyle are told that Ruby will need heart valve surgery, which costs $200,000 and without surgery, she has four weeks to live. Doyle immediately starts trying to fundraise, saying: “Listen, I’m gonna make some calls. I’ve seen FDNY do some pretty gigantic fundraisers…. Maybe we can raise some of the money needed for your mom’s medical bills” (Green 33). This illustrates how Doyle cares about Ruby and Ryder and how desperately he wants her to have a new heart valve. He also sets about trying to find someone for Ryder to stay with while his mother is in the hospital. Doyle takes Ryder back to his apartment and visits with their neighbor, Mr. Starr. Doyle convinces Mr. Starr that he is the only person Ryder has in his life, other than his mom, and he agrees to watch him for a few days. Doyle continues to show compassion throughout this unsettling time for Ryder. In addition to being compassionate, he is also a hard working fireman.
