Yeji Ahn ENGL 1008-001 09/12/2017 Personal Essay Effects on drinking age Legal drinking age is 21 in America, you can’t purchase or drink alcohol in public place if you are under age 21. However in my country Korea, you can buy or drink alcohol the year you turn 19 January 1st. Therefore, I could start to buy drinks January 1st, 2016 because I turned 19 in June 2016. So, which means I can’t drink in America but I can back in Korea. It made me curious, lower age of drinking has big effects on society or not. Why it’s different and they should lower the age or higher the age. In America, the drinking age is 21 but 18 is the age people consider as adult and it is the legal age as adult. It sounded weird to me, because you are an adult and you can’t even drink. Drinking is not good thing to do, but as an adult you still have limit because of age. First of all, it’s weird how we count the age, it’s because we count person’s age from January 1st, every year and when we born we are age 1. I am 21 in Korea age, but technically 20 in America and other countries. However, legal adult age in Korea is 18 American age, and we consider them as adult. Like drinking, smoking and driving age is all over 18. You must be 18 who pass the birthday. Most likely age 18 are the people who are freshmen in colleges. One of the biggest problem in young age drinking is drinking and driving, but I am sure it’s way lower percentage drinking and driving in Korea. In Korea, students normally s don’t get a car when they are in colleges even though legal age of driving is 18 years old. It’s because Korea is such a small country, there are lots of traffic in Korea and very good ground transportations. Also, it’s hard to afford when they are students, car is expensive and gas is three times expensive than America. Those are the reasons why not many teenagers drink and drive
