Personal Essay: How Hip-Hop Music Changed My Life

It’s 8 at night and I have just gotten home from announcing a basketball game, I have a ton of homework to get to. Most people would be sweating, however, I am not because I have a new album to listen to. Growing up I just thought that music was something that was supposed to be for long car rides or late night parties. However, in the past few years, it has so much more impact than that for me. The type of music that I like to listen to is hip-hop music.

I started to listen to hip-hop music through some of my friends who would recommend certain artists to me that I had to listen to. So I listened to them and I instantly got hooked. Now this was never a type of music that my parents listened to really. My father would listen to music from his native country of Turkey and also enjoys rock music. So it really is such a culture clash and my parents definitely didn’t expect me to listen to this type of music. I loved the hard-hitting, atmospheric style of music that it is. His commentary about certain social and political issues opened my eyes to so much right at that moment. I have really been able to participate in discussions with all I have learned and talk about a variety of issues and have been led to some great people via interests in music. The culture that comes with listening to this kind of music is awesome to be a part of. This includes hip hop’s influence in a few other areas such as fashion and sneakers, sports, and comedy. Now I think I look like a little different than a lot of people my age at least where I am from. I am dressed in jogger pants and Jordan’s rather than more traditional athletic clothes or polo
