Personal Essay: My First Interest In The Environment

My first interest in the Environment and a tentative to change people’s attitude towards it resulted in a traumatic experience at school. Back then I was considered a weird child by classmates: I never wore a fur coat even when outside temperature in my town was minus 35 degrees Celsius. At age 9 I chose I would better freeze, then I kill an animal for my fur. This experience taught me that sometimes the way you feel is not accepted by people who surround you, but you should stand for it. Growing independent and curious, I challenged every “comfort zone” I would “stuck” in. In all varieties of life and work experience one thing has never changed for me: respect for nature. In 2012 I was working in road construction camp as a translator. In my free time I volunteered in an orphanage for children with pathological diseases. The nurses explained me that in the most of the cases the ecological problems of the region such as uranium extraction or simply burning down mixed waste dumps (plastic, dead animals, car tires) are often the cause of respiratory or even hereditary illnesses. Back then I organized a movement and created a Facebook page where the consequences of peoples’ actions and ecological degradation of this region would be discussed. The freedom and the harmony with the horse reminds me the way we should approach all creatures great and small and nature in general. Besides this, writing poetry and short stories makes me feel fulfilled. In fact, in my 20s, I embraced a journey to Italy and it is a country which inspires me, and enrolled to the Letters and Philosophy faculty with a specialisation in translating and journalism. Ability to absorb a lot of varied information and curiosity allowed me not only quickly learn Italian, but also enjoy writings in this language. Much of what I read and study finds a place in my creative work as a
