Title Sometimes, it’s hard to see what someone’s intentions are. It may be especially hard to tell if a person in power is truly using their power to do good, or if they’re putting up a front in order to gain personal benefits. In The Crucible, Reverend Parris used his title and influence for personal gain. Things like this don’t just happen in literature. There are people in our world today using their status and influence to gain money or more power. Like Reverend Parris used his title as a pastor to get money, the Clinton Foundation has used its title as a “charitable organization” for personal gain. WikiLeaks recovered an email sent by Doug Band, a former top aide to Bill Clinton, in which Band spoke of a “circle of enrichment in which he raised money for the Clinton Foundation from top-tier corporations such as Dow Chemical and Coca-Cola that were clients of his firm, Teneo, while pressing many of those same donors to provide personal income to the former president.” There’s no question that the organization has received a lot of funding from various companies (Between $1 million and $5 million each from Microsoft, Pfizer, and Exxonmobil). From 2009 to 2012, the foundation raised over $500 million, but only a small portion of that money went to direct relief ($75 million). $75 million is a lot of money but considering that the Clinton Foundation is a charity, that’s next to nothing compared to what they receive through donations and fundraising. The tax returns from these years have shown that $290 million went to “other expenses” that remained unnamed. 2013 tax returns revealed that they raised $140 million, but only gave $9 million in direct aid. It’s hard to understand why there hasn’t been more speculation as to where all of that money goes. If suspicions are correct, and the Clinton Foundation is merely a cover for the Clintons to make millions of dollars, that would make them almost exactly like Parris, because they’re using their title and status for personal
