Personal Interview: Retasya Badudu The country I decided to do is Indonesia so I interviewed Retasya Badudu. She gladly let me interview her and I asked her a few questions.
The first questions I asked her was “What do you wish teachers know about your culture?” She said that her school back home was less involved with students, so certain things that teachers do here make her a little uncomfortable. It is different for her to be asked to participate in certain things, to share her opinion, or to put in her own input. She wants teachers to be more aware of it and to help encourage it a little bit more. It is weird for her name to be called in class. Retasya really enjoys it here at Dordt, she plays the piano and is very talented. She likes school it is just hard for here when the teacher asks her to participate and she is not used to doing it.
The next question I asked her was “What is the biggest difference between the United States. and Indonesia?” Retasya stated that the U.S. is more diverse then Indonesia. There are a lot more cultures in the United

She said that the streets are cleaner her and she just misses the familiarity of home. She misses hearing the language, and she misses the people. Retasya pretty much said that she misses everything about her country and the familiarities about it. Another question I asked her was “What are the common misconceptions about your culture/country?” She then continued to firmly state that her country is Indonesia, not India. That was one huge misconception that bothered her big time. She said that Asia in general is misconceptualized (I don’t even know if this is a word) a lot. Retasya stated that people think they eat weird things like dogs and cats, when really, they don’t actually eat any of those things. She feels that people don’t really know much about the Asian culture and they just assume
