Dr. Seth Holmes, who is an Assistant Professor of Public Health and Medical Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley, was witness to the lives of a group of indigenous migrant farmworkers from the Triqui village of San Miguel in the mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico. Through participant observation as well as interviews with clinic staff, public health officials, farm employees, U.S. border agents, and residents of the farming areas, he paints a detailed picture of the true cost of fresh fruits and vegetables in this country. In Holmes’ account, by using the stories of real people, we learn that Triqui farmworkers deal with backbreaking work, racism, language barriers (most Triqui farmworkers understand little English or Spanish), and
I am a decent to the average writer. Mr. Harper told me I was a good writer, but that is suspect at times. I like vocab, it is
Throughout my schooling, I initially was not a strong writer. But, after taking
In my case I had to prove to myself that I really could become a good writer all I had to do was find the writing style that works best for
Homework Two: Personal Narrative When I was younger my mother would sit my sisters and I aside after school and ask us what we wanted to become when we were older. My two elder sisters always had a different answer they would proudly belt out; a doctor, a vet, a movie star or model. Yet, I never remembered having an honest answer, I simply couldn’t think of anything I wanted to dedicate my life too. However, that was then. Today If my mother were to ask me what I intended to do with the rest of my life I would have a definite answer, one that I could be proud of, a psychiatrist.
In America, it is written in the first amendment that every American citizen has freedom of speech. I feel this civil liberty is most important because it allows Americas to express their opinions verbally. If the people in America never stated their opinions, there would never be an opposing view or side on any topic? Is not having an opposing side a negative thing? I think that it is healthy to have several different opinions on a subject because it promotes changes in environment.
Once I started writing, although it was very challenging I managed to complete them, as I sensed it was an important skill to possess. I also believed it would help me to become a more proficient writer for my other courses, therefore, I wanted to complete this course of study prior to the other classes. What I didn't comprehend was that this course would also make me a more self-assured individual. In new situations, it always makes me a bit
Life is constantly changing and surprising, but I consistently learn to grow up and fit in society. During my three years in United States, I had encountered various obstacles, and the only one trait that keeping me move forward, is persistence. I can’t describe myself as the best of the class, nor the most hardworking students. However, I had planned each step toward my goal, and make sure I can achieve them. Language is the most formidable task I had ever encountered.
When I walked into the journalism lab on the first day of school, I was clearly in a disarray, but, then again, so was The Raiders’ Digest. I was, after all, a dazed freshman. In retrospect, however, I realize that this probably was one of the most significant moments of my high school career - it was the day I found a passion, but, most importantly, it was the day I found a home. My school newspaper, on that day and for many days prior, had been in a state of deterioration, slowly regressing in terms of content, resources, and, primarily, interest.
As I journey into the process of applying to college and the roller coaster of senior year, I realize that I am truly ready to move on to greater affairs such as college. I am no longer the child, I once was. I am a strong, independent women ready to take on the world. The events that marked my transition from childhood to adulthood has to be between my sixth and seventh grade year. Those two years were the toughest of all.
Generations Past Generations come, and generations go. When each generation passes, with them goes lessons learned, memories of “good old days,” and advice that is most often right. The previous generations are full of useful information that they have picked up by experience. I always enjoyed listening to the stories of these experiences from family and friends. It was a beautiful fall day, with a crisp breeze floating across the land.
Normally I’m not one to talk of my issues. I felt that they came from a place of weakness, and I never wanted to be perceived as weak. Instead, I’ve always been known as the kind of person who could crack a joke, make others smile, and always be there to help an individual in need. Couple these aforementioned positive things with my grades, and people assumed that my life was in pristine condition. However, no one knew of the problems I dealt with personally.
In a world that idolizes technological advancement, it is easy to rely on it for almost everything. We go to work and school online, we shop online, and we socialize online, amongst other things. We’ve even implemented technology into basic human necessities. Smoke detectors, alarm systems, and even ventilation systems can now be controlled with apps. However, I believe that digital technology is not something we should implement to that extent.
Change is terrifying, but it is inevitable. Facing new situations can fill you with dread. You can either adapt to them or live a life of fear. Late August my parents gave me some news that I knew would turn my life around at a very young age. I learned that when there’s a dramatic change in your life, you must not let it stop you from living life.
I am very good at making sure my writing is precise when coming to commas, explanation points, periods, etc. My word selection is also strong, in which I use stronger words to make the sentences sound good, and overall the paper more well rounded. My weaknesses as a writer is sometimes being able to explain my points that make sense to others, or sometimes connecting different points together to make one topic. I believe my writing has improved in the last quarter in such ways as being able to use different types of inventions and different types of writing modes.
