The barriers facing international students in America There several cultural barriers facing international students, they include, language, food, clothing, behavior, and religious. The biggest hurdle facing modern international student in achieving one of the fundamental human goals i.e. educational is language. Language is a means of communication that involves spoken, written or use of kinesics. As English was my second language I found it hard to understand spoken language from my peers and lecturers. All I could see was a moving mouth producing a sound that sometimes I never grasped the word being used, as the accent took a toll on my understanding. I adapted a slow down my speech coupled with clear enunciation avoiding the use of idioms. I could ask for clarification of the things I didn’t understand noting down the technical terminologies used in the course, this assisted me in memorizing the key words. During my free time, I seek the assistance of tutors for further clarification, and seek advices of my homework and assignments. This assisted me to increase the frequency in understanding. I visited the library frequently to read and collected materials relevant to my courses. I read more on academic peered journals and magazines relevant to my course, this assisted my in having a better knowledge of the course and improved my English. At home, I used internet more to find relevant materials in my field of study, I enrolled in online English classes and I wrote articles to them for marking to improve my English skills. Further, to improve my spoken English, I involved myself in study discussion groups, listen to others carefully, called and texted in English. On social circles I listened to my friends carefully, and I avoided using jargon and I was always patient, during my free time watched talk shows; all this helped to improved my spoken English
