From the time my most recent pair of unworn shoes, usually laying in the depths of the closet, hits the dirt I feel like everything disappears. Everything in the real world is pushed away like leaves in the wind. Its just me and my mind alone for the couple hours of peace and thought up to come. Making my way up the trail I’m surrounded by a countless number of tree’s towering over me like doctors while
Day 2 Immigrant. That word gives me a label here. I am crossing the border to the U.S because my parents think it will give us a new beginning and a better life. I think they’re wrong. Our life in El Salvador was fine: We had a nice house and we were healthy.
Monologue of an Outsider (Running on stage) I’m finally home. (Taking off backpack) I don’t want to ever go back to school again. I wish I never moved to Canada.
The rest of the day was spent in solitary. That night I did manage to get what some would call sleep, but it was far from pleasant. At first, all I could see was a thick veil of darkness. Then I began hearing crying in the distance, like a lost soul adrift in the abyss of darkness. Then it cut off abruptly, only a suspended echo remaining.
Now in the town of El Caballo, which means The Horse, there lived a Mexican gunfighter named Terrible Tomas. Whenever the people of El Caballo saw Tomas swagger through the streets, his hands on the oak handles of his .44s, they let him pass. His black eyes shot fire at anyone who dared to bar his way. A stocky six-footer with dark skin and black hair, Tomas was very intimidating. There rode into town one day, a stranger.
“Why were we here?” I questioned myself “We had a great life we had food, water, shelter, and great tribe members, until he Hernado de Soto showed up and not even that he was a kind white horseman he didn’t hurt us until today.” “Order in the court Cherokee vs Europeans” the judge exclaimed. This was our chance to beat the Europeans, we couldn't back down now.
Over Seas One afternoon, five years ago, my life changed. After eight years of hoping and praying that the agency would pick us to be the next family to migrate and get the chance to build a better, happier life. We were given the opportunity to live in the United States and my family could not have been happier; Their smiles were bigger than the galaxy itself and their eyes had stars in them, glowing brighter than the sun. Everything was perfect, everybody was happy and we were ready to begin a new chapter of our life as a family. Even though everything was going according to plan' we still can't hide the fact that we are leaving our family and friends behind.
What would you do if you suddenly find yourself at the place on Earth you’d never even thought you’d visit? Can you imagine how would your day look like? My father, Chingachgook, my brother, Uncas, and I were visiting our friends on the Frontier. Life on the frontier was hard, and days were constantly filled with fear and hard work. People living on the frontier grew their own food, and lived in log cabins. The French and the Indians constantly would attack because they wanted everyone to fear them. While we were on the frontier, we learned that John, the father of the frontier families, did not want to volunteer in the war because he feared Indians would attack his family.
My Literary Journey When you are reading, the author includes lessons for the reader to discover and understand along the way. Some authors share their personal experiences with us. They can be either good or bad. If they are good they encourage us to pursue these experiences through hidden messages in the book. If they are bad they encourage us to not pursue these experiences through certain events that are expressed through the plot of the story.
From the time a child develops the ability to become potty trained, they shorty manifest the desire to mimic the individuals in their surroundings. The early years of a child’s life are extremely vital and will reflect their environment that molded them into who they are. There’s a saying that states, “It’s not where you come from but it’s where you are going,” but I disagree because you would not know where to go if you did not know where you came from. My childhood consisted of struggles, poor community, lack of communication, and the free financial programs provided by the government.
The question, “Where are you from?” is a difficult one for me to answer wholeheartedly. Anyone who was forced to move when they were younger understands the dilemma of being asked about your hometown. The word hometown can have a variety of meanings. Merriam-Webster defines a hometown as, “the city or town where you were born or grew up.” To me a hometown is the place where you have the greatest memories.
One day I was in my mom’s car on the way home from my grandma’s house in the mid afternoon on a bright summer day. We had almost gotten home when my mom’s phone rang. Ring Ring!! My sister and I had to be really quiet. My mom stayed on the phone for the whole car ride home,so I figured that something was wrong.
I think most people have a favourite place, a favourite moment, a favourite person, or perhaps a memory that has just stuck around and without realising it those things are what makes people the person they are. They give people a reason to be; to exist. I realized my moment and place on the same day, but it wasn’t exactly positive. You see, I own a wallet, like many people on this earth and I regularly use it like everyone else.
Instead of attending the three cultural events, I chose to tutor through the OMSS MARC program. I was assigned two Hispanic, 5th grade girls named Jazmin and Priscilla. Priscilla just moved to the US from Veracruz, Mexico and spoke very little English at the beginning of our meetings. One of the women in charge had me speak in both Spanish and English to her so that she could both understand me and work on her English. Jazmin speaks mainly English, but was very helpful with translating some of the things Priscilla and I had trouble communicating.
