Assignment VI

I opened my backpack, and pulled out a moldy book. It was covered in a yellow slime, with black spots splattering its previously crisp pages. The corners were moist and some pages were unreadable. The worst part was, it wasn’t mine.

I had gone to the library, a few days before, to borrow a book about programming. The hundreds of pages contained the knowledge of a language that I had never seen before. However, excited as I was, I had other work to do, so I left the library. The day that I checked out Head First HTML5, I was going head first into trouble.

As I walked over to the corner where the backpack lay, I noticed the scent of banana wafting through the air. That strong fruity smell was the evidence of the biggest crime that I committed in my life.

The book that I pulled out was covered in slime, and the wetness had caused the corners to curl. Some pages were unreadable, and all of them were stained. I was shocked - I knew that I would pay a heavy fine for the book. I rushed to my laptop, which thankfully hadn’t been touched by the banana, and began to research solutions.

I began to google for solutions. One website suggested covering the book in baking soda. Desperate as I was, I decided to follow the instructions - cover the book in baking soda. I painted Head First HTML5 in baking soda, and let it sit for 24 hours, but when I woke up the next day, the book was simply covered in white powder. The foul odor had diminished, but the spots were still dotting the pages. The baking soda hadn’t done close to anything.

Another site told me to try to rub the side of the book with sand paper. It didn’t seem like the best idea, especially because the book was old and the pages might rip under the pressure. Instead, I decided that the safest option, which was actually not very safe, was to take it to the
