Today I was given the great pleasure of working with Melissa. Melissa is a very energetic 12 year old. She has been through alot in her 12 years but she always finds a way to stay positive a push through every obstacle. Melissa has always been involved in sports. Her favorite sport is basketball. She loves basketball because both of her parents played basketball in college. Melissa received her first basketball when she was 5 years old. Almost everyday her whole family would play basketball together. Melissa lives in a very athletic family, because of this she understands the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. The differing component for Melissa would be getting used to shooting from her chair. With Melissa having a history of playing basketball before her surgery it may be different to shoot from a seated position. the fact that Melissa has never played wheelchair basketball and she doesn’t know all the components of it. The task progression for Melissa with have 5 parts. These will be similar to the ones stated above. The first step for this program is for Melissa to be able to stop her chair in order for her to shoot. Second, seh need to make sure that she is to where she can fully see the goal so she can take her shot. Third, she needs to make sure when she shoots that she pushed through the ball. Fourth, she will need to make sure to incorporate her wrist snap in her shot. Lastly, to complete the process Melissa needs to be sure to hit her follow through. An adaptation that can be implied is the space to which we make Melissa stop her chair, because in a game she will not know how far she will be stopping or if she has to stop abruptly. Melissa need to start with step one and master it, because if she is unable to stop her chair she will never have a chance to get her shot off.
