One year ago...

I just saw the results of the Select Ensemble Orchestra auditions. I remember playing. I may have tried hard, but it wasn't to my full potential. Ever since I got the music, I practiced three hours each day with my viola. Although there were many good auditionees, I naively hoped that I still had a chance. Bracing myself, I slowly looked up at the blinding white sheet contrasting to the dark red walls of our middle school. Scanning for my name, I sighed. "Maybe next year," I sighed to my best friends, Francesca Brooks and Claire Storm.

Franchesca and Claire exchanged solemn looks before saying, "There is always next year! You will definitely get in for our last year." Both girls plastered fake smiles on their faces.

"Yeah," I muttered, smiling softly. The three of us headed out to see the sun already setting, leaving a trail of red, orange, and yellow light behind it. As we walked down the long, winding sidewalk, we smiled, fake or not.
