One cold winter day Jayda was walking home from school. Jayda liked hearing the snow crunch beneath her boots. She liked the cold air nipping on her nose. Jayda loved seeing the frost hanging off the trees, sparkling in the sunlight. When Jayda walked into the house she could smell something delicious. Her mother was baking a cake. “Hi sweetie! How was your day at school?” her mother asked. Jayda felt a lump in her throat and her tummy tighten. She had a pretty rotten day at school. Jayda turned away from her mom and tried to hide her face, “Ummm, it was ok, I guess”, she said. “Did you play with Alice?” her mother asked. Jayda’s eyes grew wide. We haven’t played together for a couple of weeks now. I have no friends. Nobody likes me. I wish I could be taller and wear nice clothes like them. I wish we had a bigger house and nice car. I just want to be like everyone else!” Jayda sobbed. Her mom pulled her close and wrapped her arms around her. It felt good to tell her mom how she was feeling. Maybe mom understood after all? Mom turned to the last page of the album. There was piece of bark with weird little markings on it. The markings made a picture but Jayda wasn’t quite sure of what. “What is that?” Jayda asked. “What does it look like to you?” asked mom “Maybe a snowflake?” she mused, as she turned the album around to try and figure it out. “It’s a birch bark biting. My mother gave it to me. It’s a unique piece of art. It’s like a snowflake. It is one of a kind. It has its own markings and pattern and design. There isn’t another one like it. Just like you. You are one of a kind”, her mother explained. Jayda looked at the biting. It was beautiful and unique. She understood what her mother was telling her. Jayda hugged her mother, tightly. “I love you Jayda. You are unique. You are a gift” her mother
